Do you love Terra Chips? Are you following the Paleo diet? If you answer "yes" to both questions, then keep reading as I try to answer one of the most asked questions: "Are terra chips paleo?".
From time to time, I get cravings for a bag of Terra Chips. I love the unique crunch, the delicious taste, and the colorful gourmet slices. Since I'm curious to find the answer, I did extensive research online to share everything that I've discovered.
All About Terra Chips
Terra Chips is a brand of vegetable chips that offers a unique crunch and delectable taste.
You can get it in two major varieties: Exotic Vegetables and Sweet Potatoes.
The exotic vegetable chips are further subdivided into nine various flavors including the Original, Taro, and Exotic Harvest.
The sweet potato chips also come in a variety of mixes including BBQ Sweets, Sweets & Apples, and Spiced Sweets.
Each variant is made of a seasonal blend of root vegetables, including batata, taro, and sweet potato.
The sweet potato chips may have fewer ingredients than the exotic vegetable variant, but one thing's in common: all vegetables are fried in canola oil, safflower oil, or sunflower oil.
What Does Paleo Mean?
Paleo is getting popular among dieters who want to stay healthy and lean. However, the number of foods allowed is a bit limiting.
Basically, you can only eat real foods such as vegetables, grass-fed meats and dairy, nuts, seeds, and fruits. You will need saturated fats in generous amounts. Good saturated fats come from clarified butter and coconut oil.
As with all other diets, the Paleo diet may be challenging to some, especially to those with sweet tooth.
However, this diet does come perks, and one of them is you won’t have to count calories! The Paleo diet is perhaps the only diet known to mankind that does not encourage calorie counting, not even portion control.
Eating real foods eliminates most processed foods, grains, sugars, and legumes in your diet.
More people are following the Paleo diet because of the many health benefits it offers. Such health benefits include minimized allergies, anti-inflammatory, and clear skin.
So, Are Terra Chips Paleo?
If we look into the ingredients of Terra Chips, then they're not Paleo. Although they're made of real root vegetables, like sweet potato, batata, and taro, which are all Paleo, they're fried in refined grain oil (canola oil, safflower oil, or sunflower oil).
As we already know, grain foods and especially those that have undergone the most processing are a big no-no in Paleo.
You might argue that the oil is expeller pressed, which is a common process to organic brands. However, some acids can be added to remove any unpleasant solids that occupy during storage and some nutrients.
Omega-3, for one, is removed due to high heat. After the expeller pressing process, several refining processes follow, like bleaching and deodorizing.

All you need are these ingredients:
- 1 sweet potato
- 1 beet

- 1 teaspoon salt
- Pepper (optional)

For variation, you can try other vegetables like parsnips, carrots, and celery root. To begin, peel the vegetables (sweet potato, beet, and turnip) and cut them into halves. Use a mandolin slicer or a sharp knife to cut them into thin slices.
Useful Tip: If you want the vegetables to be extra crispy, remove all moisture as possible by sandwiching slices in-between paper towels.
After cutting, place all vegetable slices in a bowl, then sprinkle some olive oil, garlic powder, pepper, and salt. Mix all the ingredients together and lay the vegetable slices on a baking sheet in a single layer.
In a preheated oven of 400 degrees Fahrenheit, bake for about 10 minutes or until they're crispy. Once done, remove from the baking sheet and serve in a bowl.
