Why Your Stomach Hurts After Drinking Water? The Reasons You Need to Know


Do you get stomach aches when you drink water? Then, you’re not alone. I have experienced it as well which is why I had put on the detective hat and tried to look for the reasons why my stomach hurts after drinking water.

Water Contamination

If you get stomach aches after drinking water, then one of the plausible reasons might be that you’re drinking a contaminated water. This holds true when you drink tap and well water because they can be more susceptible to contamination from viruses,arsenic, and chemical compounds.

Viruses, like E-coli and Salmonella, can cause inflammation on your stomach or what is known as viral gastroenteritis or stomach flu. On the other hand, arsenic can be present in the soil and cause arsenic poisoning. You should also check yourself whether you’re allergic to chemicals, like chlorine and chloramines because they are added to the water to fight bacteria.

Visceral Hypersensitivity

Another possible reason why your stomach hurts after drinking water is visceral hypersensitivity. This is a condition where you feel an unusual degree of pain within your inner organs. You can tell that you’re experiencing this condition if your stomach hurts after ingesting non-painful stimuli, like water and food.

This is most common in people who suffer irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic condition that impacts the colon. Results of a study show that people with IBS show visceral sensitivity after drinking water. Visceral hypersensitivity can also be manifested with people who suffer functional dyspepsia, functional abdominal pain (FAP), or non-cardiac chest pain.



If your stomach starts to hurt after drinking water, then you may be drinking too much than the recommended amount. Drinking too much is one cause of hyponatremia, a condition where your sodium drops too low in your blood than normal. The right levels of sodium help the normal function of your digestive system.

One of the symptoms of this condition is abdominal pain. Others may even experience nausea, headache, and muscle cramps. So if your stomach hurts after drinking water, it might be a sign that your drinking too much.

Other Possible Reasons


Feeling a pain in your upper side or middle part of your abdomen after drinking may be a sign for acute pancreatitis. If you feel the pain more constantly in your back or just below the left shoulder blade, then you'd better consult a doctor.

Your stomach may also hurt if you drink water in big gulps. Others also feel discomfort when they drink water on an empty stomach, especially in the morning.

What You Can Do


If you feel pain in your stomach after drinking water, here are some of the solutions that you can try:

Sanitize the water

If you’re drinking tap and well water, make sure that you sanitize them well. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that you boil your drinking water for about a minute, then store it in a clean sanitized sealed container after it cools down, and refrigerate.

Never drink above the recommended fluid dosage

Although the common advice is to drink 8 glasses of water daily, it would be more fitting to replace water to fluids instead. This is because you need to count the water content that you drink in beverages and foods. Mayo Clinic recommends taking 3 liters of fluids for men and 2.2 liters of fluids for women.

Consult your doctor

If you feel more discomfort other than stomach pain, then you better check a doctor because it might be a sign of a serious illness. For instance, feeling a severe pain in the back or left shoulder blade may be a sign for acute pancreatitis. Showing other symptoms like vomiting, fatigue, and convulsions may be a cause for hyponatremia.

Drink room temperature water

If your stomach hurts after drinking cold water, then switch to room temperature. You should drink it in small sips rather than on big gulps because it might stress your stomach. It might also be best to follow a healthy diet that is rich in fiber to prevent gas and stomach cramps.
